I would walk into a record store with the little spending money I had,
feeling slightly nervous as I picked out an unfamiliar album based on its cover alone.
Sometimes, that was where I found the music
I would continue listening to for the rest of my life.
Of course, not every purchase was a success.
But even those mistakes could open the door
to a new world of music I had never known before.
Years passed, and streaming became the most common way to listen to music.
Recommendation algorithms have grown more sophisticated,
constantly reminding us just how much incredible music
is still out there waiting to be discovered.
Then, one day, I had a thought.
Could we recreate that feeling of buying an album on instinct?
The excitement of taking a chance on something unknown.
The anticipation on the way home.
The moment just before pressing play for the first time.
Could that experience be brought back in a way that belongs to the modern age?
That question became the starting point of this personal project.
After nearly a year of development,
it finally began to take shape.
Its name is DigDeck.
DigDeck is a place where music listeners from around the world
can build and share their own virtual CD racks.
It was created to capture as much as possible
of the excitement and unpredictability of discovering music through its cover.
There is intentionally no in-app preview on DigDeck.
Instead, you follow your instincts.
Choose music based on its artwork, title,
or a comment left by someone else.
Collect the tracks that catch your attention,
turn them into a playlist,
or arrange them into your own Deck and share it with the world.
You can post your Decks on social media,
or use Shelf Surf to visit a randomly selected Deck
created by someone, somewhere in the world.
DigDeck is still growing.
More useful and enjoyable features for music lovers
will be added little by little along the way.

Damals, als physische Tonträger – Schallplatten, Kassetten und CDs – die Art waren, wie wir Musik entdeckten,
ging ich mit meinem wenigen Taschengeld in einen Plattenladen
und suchte, ein wenig nervös, ein unbekanntes Album allein nach seinem Cover aus.
Manchmal fand ich genau dort die Musik,
die mich für den Rest meines Lebens begleiten würde.
Natürlich war nicht jeder Kauf ein Erfolg.
Doch selbst solche Fehlgriffe konnten die Tür
zu einer neuen, mir bis dahin unbekannten Welt der Musik öffnen.
Die Jahre vergingen, und Streaming wurde zur gängigsten Art, Musik zu hören.
Empfehlungsalgorithmen sind immer ausgefeilter geworden
und erinnern uns ständig daran, wie viel großartige Musik
noch immer darauf wartet, entdeckt zu werden.
Dann kam mir eines Tages ein Gedanke.
Könnten wir dieses Gefühl wiedererschaffen, ein Album ganz nach dem Bauchgefühl zu kaufen?
Die Aufregung, sich auf etwas Unbekanntes einzulassen.
Die Vorfreude auf dem Heimweg.
Der Moment unmittelbar vor dem allerersten Abspielen.
Könnte dieses Erlebnis auf eine Weise zurückkehren, die in unsere heutige Zeit passt?
Diese Frage wurde zum Ausgangspunkt dieses persönlichen Projekts.
Nach fast einem Jahr Entwicklung
nahm es endlich Gestalt an.
Sein Name ist DigDeck.
DigDeck ist ein Ort, an dem Musikfans aus aller Welt
ihre eigenen virtuellen CD-Regale zusammenstellen und teilen können.
Es wurde geschaffen, um so viel wie möglich
von der Spannung und Unberechenbarkeit einzufangen, Musik über ihr Cover zu entdecken.
Bei DigDeck gibt es ganz bewusst keine Hörproben direkt in der App.
Stattdessen folgst du deinem Instinkt.
Wähle Musik anhand ihres Covers, ihres Titels
oder eines Kommentars von jemand anderem aus.
Sammle die Titel, die deine Aufmerksamkeit wecken,
stelle daraus eine Playlist zusammen
oder ordne sie in deinem eigenen Deck an und teile es mit der Welt.
Du kannst deine Decks in sozialen Medien posten
oder mit Shelf Surf ein zufällig ausgewähltes Deck besuchen,
das irgendwo auf der Welt von jemandem erstellt wurde.
DigDeck wächst weiter.
Nach und nach werden weitere nützliche und unterhaltsame Funktionen
für Musikliebhaber hinzukommen.

¿Podríamos recrear esa sensación de comprar un álbum por intuición?
La emoción de apostar por algo desconocido.
La expectación durante el camino a casa.
El instante justo antes de pulsar reproducir por primera vez.
¿Podría recuperarse esa experiencia de una forma propia de la era moderna?
Esa pregunta se convirtió en el punto de partida de este proyecto personal.
Tras casi un año de desarrollo,
por fin empezó a tomar forma.
Su nombre es DigDeck.
DigDeck es un lugar donde melómanos de todo el mundo
pueden crear y compartir sus propias estanterías virtuales de CDs.
Fue creado para recuperar, en la medida de lo posible,
la emoción y la imprevisibilidad de descubrir música a través de su portada.
En DigDeck no hay deliberadamente ninguna escucha previa dentro de la aplicación.
En su lugar, sigues tu intuición.
Elige música por su portada, su título
o un comentario que haya dejado otra persona.
Reúne las canciones que llamen tu atención,
conviértelas en una playlist
